In a world where more or bigger is considered better, only a few realize that having less is actually happier and more satisfying. If you are thinking of buying a new home, consider what benefits you can get from having a smaller one. You will be surprised that having a bigger house does not always mean you will be happier. In fact, you may find a smaller home will be able to give you a life that is fuller, happier, and more satisfying.

Less Expensive

Obviously, a smaller house is less expensive than a bigger one, at least in a general sense. It is less expensive to purchase, and even less expensive to maintain. A smaller home means you will have less expense on insurance, taxes, and utilities. You will also be able to save on house movers should you decide to move eventually since you only have a few items to transport.

Easier to Clean and Maintain

A smaller house is also clearly a lot easier to clean and maintain. Everybody who owns a house understands how much time, energy, and effort is needed to maintain one. All things being equal, there is no question that you will spend lesser time, energy, effort, and money in cleaning and maintaining a smaller house.

Less Tendency for Clutter

The thing about clutter is that it can really make life a lot stressful. Nobody wants to live in a house full of clutter. However, if you think that a smaller house is easier to accumulate clutter, you might want to think again. If you are a naturally organized person, you will actually find it a lot easier to get rid of clutter from a smaller home. Since the space is limited, you can easily resist the temptation of accumulating more stuff. Less stuff means less clutter. Enough said.

Less Environmental Impact

Since a smaller home forces you to focus only on stuff that are important, you will have a much lower chance of hurting the environment. Even the building of the house is already environmentally friendly since it requires fewer resources to build.

More Peach of Mind

Peace of mind is something that this generation really needs. With a big house full of different stuff, that is just something that is difficult to achieve. On the other hand, a smaller house allows you to invest only on things that actually matter. It also forces you to get rid of excess. As a result, you will not have the dilemma of having to worry or care about so many things that can rob your heart and mind of peace.

More Time with Family

Perhaps the biggest advantage of having a small home is that it gives you more time to be with your family. You can have a big house like a mansion with many rooms, but if that means you will have to exert a lot of effort all the time just so your family can eat together or bond together, you would rather have a small cottage with one room.

More Chance to Sell

Finally, since a smaller house is less expensive, it has a better chance of attracting buyers should you decide to sell it someday.

In the end, it’s really up to you whether you are going to invest in a big house or a smaller one. There is really no good or bad decision. The only point of this article is to open people’s mind to the possibility of living a happy and satisfied life in a smaller home. Photo Credit: Michael Kumm (Flickr.com)
