Natural Allergy Treatments

Seasonal allergies are a common occurrence these days. Falling leavers, blooming trees, bushes and flowers – they can all trigger them. While medications are a common choice, there are some natural remedies you could try before calling in the chivalry.

Saline Nasal Spray

This century-old remedy has received both Eastern and Western physicians’ stamp of approval. It is a simple water-salt solution that will clean your nostrils from any irritants and allergens, thus allowing you to breathe easier. To make the solution you need a quart of water. Boil it to purify it and then let it cool off. Once it is lukewarm, you can add up to three tbsp. of non-iodized salt (sea salt works just fine) and one tbsp. baking soda.

The process of clearing your nostrils is rather unpleasant as it involves pouring the mixture in your nose to rid of the irritants.

Steam Inhalation

Another very efficient way of reducing the signs of allergies to a healthy minimum is by steam inhalations. This is yet another century-old method that can have no side effects. All you need to do is boil water in a container of your choosing. A sauce pan works best for me as it provides a wide surface for the water to evaporate. Once the liquid boils take it off the stove and place it on a secure location.

Drop a few drops of tea tree, rosemary, eucalyptus and myrtle essential oils. Take a bath towel and place it over your head, so that you tent the sauce pan. Your face needs to be far enough to avoid burns but still, as close to the water as possible. Stay over the steam for about 5-10 minutes and then continue with your daily routine.

Cleaning Your Ducts

You would be surprised to find out what latest studies indicate. Scientists estimate that the air quality indoors has significantly worsened and is now much lower than that outdoors (even in city centres). How is this possible? While your state-of-the-art ventilation system or AC have all the necessary defences against bacteria and germs (HEPA filters and all), no one has secured your vents and ducts against the nasty fellows. Therefore, they find a superb sanctuary in the ducts from where they can successfully invade your entire home.

To prevent this from happening, you should consider regular cleaning of your ducts. Thanks to special tools and equipment and seasoned specialists, these firms can guarantee that your home will not become a breeding ground for air-borne allergens.

Diversify Your Food

Some foods like honey and yoghurt can stimulate your immune system thus strengthening your resistance towards the allergens. Try to eat as many fruit and vegetable and listen to your granny’s piece of advice – eat a tablespoonful of honey every morning before you have breakfast!
